Homestay Expectations

Homestay is different from living in a hotel, rental property or dormitory. As a new member in the homestay family, you will respect the family traditions and routines, communicate with other family members, and be mindful of others' needs. Before choosing homestay, you need to think about your objectives of living in a host family, your ability to adapt, and how you will contribute to the family.

Homestay Conditions and Facilities

You will see the details of homestay conditions and facilities available after registration and logging into the members area. Homestay fees depend on home location, and facilities/meals provided. The following are the minimum standards of homestay conditions.

  • at least one adult must live in the home willing to have conversations with you and take you to participate in community events if you wish
  • tidy and comfortable, with good natural lighting and ventilation
  • a room is exclusively for yourself unless otherwise specified. The room is furnished (a bed, linens, a desk,a chair, a lamp and a wardrobe).
  • there are no more than the planned number of international students living in the family
  • if you wish, you may share a room with one friend of the same sex
  • reasonable access to living room, toilet, bathroom, kitchen and laundry facilities
  • have a key to the home

Meals

Steps to Satisfaction

1. Invite

2. Apply

3. Decide

You may choose to have meals together with the host family. Australians' way of cooking may be different from yours. If you plan to cook for yourself, make sure to check with the host before applying. You may also join community networking events organised by our community leaders where you can have familiar foods.

Laundry and Ironing

Before applying, you may search and confirm whether host parents will help you with laundry and ironing.

Internet and Telephone

Australia's way of charging internet and phone usage may be differnet from your country. Please check with the host whether internet and phone are provided and what charges apply.

Realistic Expectations

Unless you have lived in Australia, your understanding of Australia may be limited to media or other people's experience. However movies, tourism advertisements and news are not equal to everyday life of Australian families. Each family is different. Unrealistic expectations are often the causes of misunderstanding and disappointment.

Our processes and tools are designed to help you and the host family to understand each other better and make informed decisions before your arrival. With realistic expectations, you will find your homestay experience satisfying and enjoyable.
